First Term Report Cards…

Thank you to those parents who were able to attend our observation days.  It was a great opportunity to be able to touch base with you for a quick conference while you were here.  All report cards were sent home today.  Please sign the report (if you haven’t already) and return it to school so that I can make a copy for your child’s OSR. I will send it back to you after I have made a copy.

Time is flying, with Term 2 already upon us.  I am excited for the next month and celebrating the magic of the Christmas Season with all of you.  As always, thank you for your support!

Down on Grandpa’s Farm…

Download

Today’s top banana entertained us with her puppetry skills while we sang ‘Down on Grandpa’s Farm’ together.  The children have a lot of fun acting out the animal sounds and playing in the puppet centre. Puppetry and song are great ways to help build good oral language skills!

Observation Days…

‘Young children show their understanding by listening, showing, and telling.’ The Kindergarten Program p.8

What better way to understand a day in the life of your child at school, then to come and join in the fun!! This observation period is a wonderful opportunity for both you and your child.  I encourage you to sign up soon.

The sign up sheets are posted on the wall outside the classroom.  Your child’s first term report will be handed out at your appointment. If you cannot make any of the scheduled times, please contact me and we can make alternate arrangements.

I look forward to meeting with you over the next few weeks!

Five Little Pumpkins

Happy Halloween everyone!

The students love to recite this poem together.  We use real pumpkins in the class to act it out, but you could use paper ones at home to help illustrate the concept of 1 less and counting backwards from 5!

Five little pumpkins sitting on a gate;

The first one said, “Oh my it’s getting late.”

The second one said, “There are witches in the air.”

The third one said, “But I don’t care.”

The fourth one said, ”Let’s run and run and run.”

The fifth one said,  ”I’m ready for some fun!”

“Wooooooo” went the wind,

And out went the lights.

And the five little pumpkins rolled out of sight.

A turkey is…

For our shared reading at Thanksgiving we recited this poem:

A Turkey Is

A turkey is a funny bird

Its head goes wobble, wobble

And all it knows is just one word

Gobble, Gobble, Gobble!

We then made handprint turkeys and illustrated backgrounds with crayons.

The Kissing Hand….

During our half day entry, the new JK’s enjoyed reading the story entitled, “The Kissing Hand”. We read about a racoon who was scared to go to school, but felt better after his mom gave him a ‘kissing hand’. The love from the kiss filled the little raccoon with warmth that made him feel safe and happy all through his school day. You might wish to ask your child about the story and give your child his/her own kissing hand on the first full day of school!  You can listen to the story by clicking this link:

Welcome back!

September is nearly upon us and I have been busy preparing our room for a brand new year! I look forward to meeting you again on our JK interview day September 1st and our JK half day on September 3rd! Full days for JK and SK begin on Tuesday September 8th.

I hope you visit our blog often during the year. I hope to keep it updated regularly and feature some of the things we do in the classroom! Please feel free to leave comments or view it with your child. I find it makes for a nice springboard for conversation about things that happen during the day in class.

I am anticipating a fantastic year! Welcome!!

Splash Day Sunshine…

What a beautiful day we had for splash day today! The children were SO EXCITED to play in the water and I am sure it felt so good to cool down while playing.  Thank you to the parents who stayed to help and to those who sent in sprinklers and pools.

Just a reminder that report cards went home today with all of your child’s school work. Please sign page 3 of the report card and return it by THURSDAY. This is an important piece that accompanies the report card copy and is placed in the students’ OSR’s.

I hope you enjoy looking at the photo cd’s with your child.  If you have any problems viewing them, please let me know and I will try and troubleshoot. Also, the paint on the pillowcases is washable, if you decide to use the memory pillowcase and need to wash it.

I hope you are able to spend some family time together this summer and I thought a kite would be a nice way to enjoy this.  The kite, to me, has always been symbolic of ‘reaching one’s potential’.  I sincerely hope that each one of your children soars to new heights as they grow and change over their school years.

It has been such a pleasure teaching your child this year. Thank you so much for your on-going support throughout the year.  Have a wonderful summer. I will miss you all!

Thank you ALL…

Wow! What a crowd we had show up at the Spring Sing and BBQ Picnic.  It was really wonderful to see everyone and your children certainly enjoyed spending this time together with you.  Thankfully the weather held out nicely (I’m not so sure that I would be able to fit everyone in the gym!)

The afternoon was filled with many fun events at our Play Day.  The students got to throw wet sponges at their bigger buddies and ‘watered’ them with water squirters.  They also drew with sidewalk chalk,  had their faces painted, ran through an obstacle course, and learned how to throw and cath water balloons.  Hannah Montana made an appearance and we all enjoyed watermelon.

We are very sorry that the freezies did not get passed out – they did not freeze entirely.  We still have our order lists and will distribute them on Tuesday.

Thanks again for coming and let’s all enjoy our last week of Junior Kindergarten together!

‘Smart’ Kids…

Yesterday, we practiced some math skills by using the Smart Board in our classroom.  We drew numbers from 1-10 with our finger or the smart marker.  We dragged over dragons to show what each number represented.  We showed ‘one more’ than the number by dragging over one more dragon and we showed ‘one less’ by taking one dragon away.
